Another Year, another GDC

I’m visiting the US this week for GDC. It’s the first time I’ve attended in the last two years, but GDC never really changes. This year I actually gave a talk, which was fun, though I had so much work to do that I barely had time to visit any sessions. If you’ve written to me in the last, say, three or four weeks, I probably didn’t get back to you because I was crunching hard on getting my talk done. Sorry. I’ll write back, I promise.

I didn’t see anything horror-specific this year. I tried to go to both of Richard Rouse III’s talks, but both of them were closed due to popularity. I did have a chance to hang out with Richard for a bit, which was cool. I told him that he should watch this video about Deadly Premonition, which really does look like it’s in the running for greatest game ever made. I also bumped into Akira Yamaoka and Goichi Suda this morning, which was kinda neat. Yamaoka remembered me from the last time we spoke (what, 3 or 4 years ago, right after Silent Hill 4 came out). I told him I’m still waiting for him to do a talk on Earless Hoichi.

I’ll be back in Japan late next week. Silent Hill Homecoming, Heavy Rain, and, yes, Deadly Premonition await.

  1. Oh yeah, I’ll post all about it in a day or two. I’m running an experiment right now to see how it does with zero promotion. One more day and it’ll be out for a week.

  2. Although it’s easily my most anticipated game of the year, and I love it (I love it SO much!), I’m firmly of the opinion that I have no idea if Heavy Rain really fits the Quest criteria. It’s something else, something new. It doesn’t feel like a survival/horror game, but at the same time many of the elements are there. I’m very eager to read your review and see what you think about it.

  3. Oh man, I can’t wait to hear what you think of Deadly Premonition! I’m singing its praises to as many people as I can, but it really is one of those games that you either love or can’t stand, and it’s a hard sell to people who aren’t already into that sort of thing. 😛

  4. Deadly Premonition is now one of my favorite games. I can’t wait to hear your impressions. I love this site btw

I wish that GDC and other manifestations people start talking more about gameplay, less about cutting edge graphics. Old survival horror games are best, never mind bad or just acceptable graphics, other things are what is important.
Other genres are in the same position, more graphics, less time for important things.
There’s nothing more beautifull than playing old style SH games.

    Hi Chris,

Only partially related to this post. I am a long time reader of the site, but i also subscribe to edge magazine.

I noticed in this months issue your site was their “site of the month”. While I think they did a pretty decent job describing the site, the article it was linked to was very disappointing. I have included the link to Edges homepage above, but I couldnt see the link on the website.

Still – it was good to see you getting sme recognition!

Also, I watched cure for the first time recently – really enjoyed it (but i had to set my dvd player to R1 to get a copy of it -gonnna watch it again before i switch back). Great movie..

  7. Chris,

Cheers. Though i must say I’m surprised they didnt drop you a a line given how open you are about communicating on the site!

If you cant get a copy of edge, I’ll scan a copy of the page and fire it your way!
