Hayarigami

Thanks to Insert Credit for the link to Hayarigami, a new text-based horror adventure title from Nippon Ichi Software (Disgaea/La Pucelle/Phantom Brave). The site doesn’t have a lot of content, but it does have a few tiny screens. What do you think? Should this sort of game be included in the Quest? I’ve already included a few other text-only games, such as Kamaitachi No Yoru 2, but I am not sure if they really belong here. What are your thoughts?

Update: 1up.com has posted a bunch more information on the game.

  1. Just for the sake of finishing the Quest you
might want to drop the text based horror themed
games. There are tonnes of them- Saishu Densha,
    Scary Stories at School (Saturn),Moonlight
Syndrome, all the Twilight Syndromes and a scad
of FMV Japanese horror mysteries. Maybe you need an action threshold
for listed titles? That would dump all the interactive novels and cinema allowing you to
focus on the horror and survival horror.
Anything noteworthy left off the Quest could
still be fodder for the forums or a special
    feature.

  2. Yeah, that’s sort of the direction I am leaning in. I feel that text games have a lot to offer (esp. in terms of showing us how to do a story well), but I just don’t know if I’ll ever be able to play them all.

  3. I think ya should drop the txt-based games too, aside from the fact that there are loads of them, I personally don’t consider words on a screen scary on there own. Although, I could be completely wrong, cos I don’t think i’ve ever played one of these games, apart from the SH gameboy advanceone, which sucked.
Also, Chris, i’ve been looking through the games list, and a few games that, I thought to be survival horror, were not included. These games being: Devil May Cry and Onimusha. Are these games too action orientated to be classed as survival horror? Anyways, awesome site

    Shime,
I’ve put up a page about some of the games I omit and the reasons that I’ve omitted them. The page is here:

Yeah, I don’t think Devil May Cry or Onimusha are really about horror, even though they both take stylistic ques from common horror themes.

About the text games: Kamaitachi No Yoru (the first) was excellent. The games are actually fairly effective at scares, but being scary isn’t a requirement for inclusion in the site (otherwise, horror games like Illbleed and Gregory Horror Show wouldn’t make the cut). I am still deciding, but I think I’ll probably cut text games from the quest on the basis that they simply take too long to play (same argument for light gun games).
