Fatal Frame 4 Arriving Shortly

I need a smaller screenshot of this game.

I’m pretty excited about the next version of the Fatal Frame series, especially since it’s headed for the Wii and involves Suda51 somehow. So it was cool to see scans from Famitsu about the game, but even better news is that the game will be released at the end of July in Japan. Between this game, Silent Hill 5, Alone in the Dark 5, and the already-out Condemned 2: Bloodshot, 2008 is looking like a really good year for horror gamers.

  1. This is the #1 upcoming title that I’m looking forward to right now. I heard that Nintendo themselves are taking part in the development of this one. I thought the first 3 were already awesome as hell, but I’m sure the big N and Suda51 will come up with ways to make it even better.

  2. Wow! I had played FF 1, 2 and 3! I can’t miss this one. Hope we can see Rei ^^.
Just Hope Nintendo don’t screw the game. Survival Horror is not the strongest point of the big N.

  3. My only beef with this game is that it seems to come for the wii only…
Oh well maybe in another year or so…

  4. I agree, a great year for horror fans, prolly/hopfully the best for the past while, lets just hope they are all actually good. Im a little iffy on the Next Gen Survival Horror thing, I mean with better graphics it could be allot more gripping vissially, but you still never know. Example, Silent Hill 5 looks great(ish) but would look allot better if it were a new series, it has the Silent Hill feel, but than again it dosnt at the same time.

P.S. pursonally, im still not sure if I will consider RE5 a real horror game, but I know it will be a great game 9or atleast hope it will). Mainly im not sure bcouse Im still deciding whether I could call RE4 a Horror. I think its more Action with a few dashes of horror here and there.

(totally off topic from next gen horror, but is Parasite Eve a good game? I just got my hands on an unopened copy, (not sure if thats rare or not) with a stratagy guide my uncle put together (he loves it).

Also chris, sorry if this is a hassle, but I still cant register, and my email might have goten lost with some of the rest of your emails, so just incase, here is my email: yellow–peeps@hotmail.com )

  5. Red Infection: Parasite Eve is a pretty decent game which has a highly customizable weapon system, but if you’re looking for scares you better look elsewhere. I don’t know what intentions you have with your unsealed copy but you could sell it for a little fortune in Europe, as the game was never released there (I had to pay much for my mint greatest hits copy).

As for Fatal Frame 4, I also hope that it goes multiplatform as I do not plan to buy a next gen console in the next two or so years.

  6. Another one, eh? Well, I certainly enjoyed Project Zero III, even though I only played about 2 hours of it. It had a creepy clausto feel to it. If I were going to get any new console though, I think I would go 360 > Wii > PS3. Hopefully, I won’t have to bother with a PS3 now due to the multi-platform deal they have with certain titles. It is just way too much money down the drain.

  7. If I said I was even remotely excited about Fatal Frame 4 coming out… I’d be lying. I think it’s cool of Nintendo to want to add to the Wii, but given the fact that the xBox had the directors cuts of FF1 & FF2 and that PS2 was the only console to have game 3, I’m feeling kind of screwed over by a complete platform jump off of both systems. Adding to that the fact that the controls are going to more than likely end up being scrapped from before so they can fit the Wii-mote, it adds up to a very bitter person living inside me.

I’m not opposed to it being on the Wii, just ONLY on the Wii.

  8. I completely agree with RoyalFlush. It annoys the hell out of me when these platform jumps happen. They already tried this BS with Resident Evil and GameCube. (lucky for me RE4 came out for PS2 eventually) I own FF1, 2 and 3 for PS2, but I guess I don’t get to play FF4, since I’m not going to shell out for a Wii for just one game. They’d better not do this to SH as well or I’m going to have to start writing scathing letters Grampa Simpson style 🙂

  9. It’s just economics. There are more Wii owners than owners of any other recent platform, so people who want to make money make games for the Wii. See also: DS, and last generation, PS2.

Also, this generation of console hardware makes it significantly more difficult to port the same game to all three consoles–they are all quite different in terms of features and hardware design. So I think that there’ll be more exclusives to every platform, especially Wii vs PS360.

  10. Chris:”There are more Wii owners than owners of any other recent platform, so people who want to make money make games for the Wii. “

I never would have guessed more people own a Wii than an Xbox360, especially since where I live it’s still pretty hard to get a Wii in stores.

That is true that it will get harder to port from platform to platform, especially when it comes to Wii verses anything else. Sadly it means I’ll probably end up letting Fatal Frame go because of it. I’m not paying a fortune for a system when I’m not even excited about how everything control related will be changing. If I can play it at someone’s house and I decide I like it I may go for it, but I haven’t been convinced thus far for anything on the Wii… It’s just not my thing.

But really, I guess it could be worse. It’s worse to me when you have a single game that bridges a series together on a portable system apart from the rest of the series that is still going on a bigger console. At least if the entire series jumps it remains consistent.

  11. There’s a pretty good site about game and console sales, if you are interested in how the consoles stack up:

    http://vgchartz.com/

Basically, I think it’s really good that consumers have choices, and that those choices are diverse. It would be way worse if there was only one console, or if all the consoles were the same, because then we’d probably not get minor (relatively) games like Fatal Frame at all.

  12. Thanks for the link! I’ve been curious about the difference in the sales of consoles, but I’ve always been wary of what sites are accurate.

I agree that it’s great to have diverse consoles, but that’s not really my problem with what’s happening with Fatal Frame 4- its the fact that there isn’t a choice for how you buy it. But I also understand it’s not going to be practical for the developers to try and make it fit another system when it is being set up for the Wii system. It’s just unfortunate that it is working out this way.

  13. Yeah, the Wii is selling substantially better than the 360. Last month, in the US, the Wii sold twice as many consoles as the 360 & PS3 COMBINED according to NPD (the major market research group for videogame sales) and that was the month that GTA4 was supposed to give such a big boost to those consoles (it obviously didn’t). Now, the marketshare between the 360 and the Wii is pretty even in the US because the 360 had a year head start plus the US is the 360’s strongest region, but it’s only a matter of time before the Wii demolishes it’s competition: it’s already tracking sales faster than the PS2 did at this stage of its life and unlike the PS3 & 360, the Wii is selling well in all regions (the PS3 is really only doing well in Europe & the 360 is really only doing well in the US).

Oh and I’d be cautious about using vgchartz.com for sales data. Sometimes their data is based on solid research, but other times, it’s just wild guesses and sadly they don’t tell you which is which. Actually market research done by groups like NPD is much better (you can usually find that information on major gaming forums like Penny-Arcade).

As for Fatal Frame 4, I’m cautiously optimistic. I thought Fatal Frame 1 was decent, but I never really got into it enough to finish it. The thought of a well respected horror game series with a full blown sequel made especially for the Wii certainly intrigues me though.

The Wii might be the most popular wells-old console at the moment, but alot of it’s audience would be younger kids and parents. The Wii is aimed at families, so games like Fatam frame probably won’t attract the masses of Wii owners (which is a shame).

But I hope that the shift to Wii is successful for Tecmo. I’d hate for the game to sell poorly just because they made a bad choice of consoles. though it IS a bit weird that they are ‘ignoring’ their original fans who played the earlier games on Playstation and Xbox.

It seems to be a mixed basket. older Wii owners are happy that a more ‘mature’ game is coming to Wii, but PS3 and 360 owners want the series to continue on their consoles. it’s a lose/lose situation for Tecmo because they’ve split their games amongst the three main game consoles now.

This discussion is split down the middle with people who want it on Wii and people who don’t:

    http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/38474/t1112908-fatal-frame-4-for-wii-agree-disagree/

Sorry. i don’t mean to continuosly link to that site. it’s just got interesting discussions about Fatal Frame, is all.

  16. It’s a common perception that the Wii is aimed at a younger or more casual audience, but I’ve not seen any data to back that up. The data I have seen suggests that Resident Evil 4 sold a million units on that platform, which seems to suggest to me that there are plenty of consumers of horror games with Wiis in their homes.

  17. I’m not saying this is proof by any means, but if I had to make a guess why people see the Wii as being aimed for younger kids is because when I look at the Best Buy around where I live I see that most of the games for that console are colorful, childlike in graphic designs and the like. Without closer inspection it appears to me that the system has more games aimed at a younger audience. I think there are probably many people that make assumptions similar to this without really looking into what games are all out there for the system, and whether or not those “colorful” games are really for kids. That just seems to be how it works with the people I personally know. It kind of makes me want to actually go through all of the games there and see how the numbers really stack up.

One thing I do want to point out about the number of people who own game consoles, the xbox360 came out at least a year before the Wii, right? I haven’t done much research own the matter of sales myself, but I just want people to keep that in mind when they talk about how many people own, not just by looking at the currents sales.

Here’s a thought that kind of occurred to me: I’ve heard people on numerous forums say that they think Fatal Frame 4 might be being used to draw in more mature audiences to the Wii, but that doesn’t even strike me as logical, or a good idea really. Fatal Frame seems to fall under the rug compared to games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill- the idea that bringing in a game that can barely draw a crowd on it’s former consoles might help on a new one… it just sounds a bit funky to me. But hey, that’s how rumors go, I suppose.

  18. I see screenshoots and trailers, I think FF4 is something that an “old gen” PS2 can manage perfectly. Well, we know: the Wii core is just a Gamecube. I am a bit sorry about that: this new chapter will not have nothing new excepts of the control system… 🙁
